Genital Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2. Most people have no or minimal signs or symptoms from a herpes infection. When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more painful blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. The blisters break, leaving tender sores that may take two to four weeks to heal. There is no cure for herpes but antiviral medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks.
Herpes is diagnosed by either a clinical inspection, culture, or a blood test.
